Yesterday was filled with pain and discouragement. But then I heard her singing…
There are lots of things I’m thankful for. One of them is learning from my Can Opener that just because you have a bad day doesn’t mean you have to wear it like a badge for the whole world to see.
We cats notice a lot of things that people wouldn’t expect us to notice- or care about. One of those things is how the day goes for our humans. We see when they are in pain or upset and we want to help, but we’re “only” cats. We can’t take away pain, but we can snuggle up and give you head butts, and knead our paws and purr….
You know that a cat’s purr has healing properties, right? Yep. Check out this video to learn more about it.
Sometimes though, in spite of being our cutest, purring our loudest, and acting like a psycho to make our humans laugh, things still weigh them down. That’s when we just sort of slink nearby and wait to see what happens. Sometimes I’m really surprised at my human, because when I think she’s going to fall apart, she surprises me and starts to sing praise, or I’ll hear her begin to pray and give thanks for everything she can think of. I mean even “little” things- which apparently aren’t that “little” if you don’t have them.
You know, things like a place to call home. Things like the ability to have a cup of coffee to wake up with, or like being able to do something nice for someone to put a smile on their face. I used to wonder what in the world was wrong with her for “giving thanks” or singing praise when she felt discouraged, defeated, or troubled.
But then I started to figure out why she does it. It’s a powerful weapon against anxiety and depression. Because after a few minutes of forcing her attention off of whatever is bothering her, and onto looking for things to be thankful for, her tone started to change, her expression softened, and before either of us knew it, she was happy and moving on with her day. She says it’s hard to be angry or discouraged when you’re singing. Especially when what you’re singing about is God’s faithfulness.
Who would’ve guessed?

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Very wise dear furiend, very wise!

Lessons learned in many storms my dear- it’s not an easy thing to do when you feel like the world is crashing down- but it brings almost instant comfort and peace. And changes your entire perspective. It’s called “the sacrifice of praise.” And it shifts everything-and pleases the Lord immensely!

The “sacrifice of praise” – beautiful! I always simply thought we each made a choice for how to react/respond, but never considered the praise aspect.

Yes- it’s all over the book of Psalms- and it’s a “sacrifice” because it’s the last thing a person feels like doing when they are discouraged, feeling afraid or angry or overwhelmed. But praise is powerful- it invites the Holy Spirit into your circumstances!🌸

Love this concept – don’t know how I’ve missed it all these years.

Well I usually read a few Psalms every morning- especially if I’m facing a struggle- they are so comforting- that is how I started learning about the power of praise and worship!

Well put. You are a very smart kitty. Our Mom likes to say, “Speak the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” We think our humans might be friends. Purrs, Snoops and Kommando Kitty
