Happy Caturday!
Somehow she thinks I want to hear all about her romance with Romeo, the siamese down the street. I could care less. Now, if she wants to tell me about a handsome calico cat, or a persian, I might want to hear about it. But I’m not interested in her boyfriend and his “purrfect royal blue eyes.” Geez.
We more experienced felines are more concerned about the important things in life- like food, catnip, treats, and the best napping spots in the house.
We’re different. She loves to run wild outside, chase mice and butterflies, climb trees and hunt ducks.
I love a nice, warm lap to nap on. Especially if it comes with a nice long grooming, a massage on my head and shoulders, followed by treats, and accompanied by a teddy bear with a blanket tucked around me.
I’d rather melt into the Can Opener’s lap and purr myself to sleep any day. Oh! It’s time for my grooming now! Goodnight!
I should have known today would be a weird day, when the Can Opener didn’t seem to be her usual self when she woke up and headed for the Keurig. I couldn’t put my paw on it, but something felt off. So, as I usually do, I bolted out the back door to look for Mama or Sheba or some nice, juicy baby duck to play with.
When I came back inside about 2 hours later, the Critters and their parents were there visiting! My human was back to her cheery self and the kcup supply was diminishing rapidly, so I knew everything was going to be okay. She must’ve just woke up with a headache.
The Critters ran out into the backyard to play, and the Can Openers visited with their grown up Critter (Jazlyn and Lily’s Mom)- and had coffee and then made butterfly shrimp and french fries for everyone and discussed Mother’s Day plans. Soon it was time for Lily’s nap, but all the excitement had her too wound up and they decided to go home.
After they left, Sushi gave our Can Opener the look that said, “I don’t appreciate my nap being interrupted, human. Don’t let it happen again.” Then she headed for the bedroom to take her nap without further interruptions, and I settled down on my human’s lap and was being snuggled, and brushed and was just beginning to fall asleep when suddenly we all heard a roar in the distance that got closer and louder- and things started to shake- and I tried to bolt- I could tell my humans were afraid-
The noise was SO LOUD and it sounded as though something was about to crash into our living room before we could even move! The Can Opener tried to hold onto me and calm me, but I flew off her lap and ran for cover. The two Can Openers could hear the jet long after it was out of sight, but the whole neighborhood was shaken and wondering what was happening. All I wanted to know was whether or not it was safe to come back home!
Our Can Opener searched the news stations for any mention of a planned Air Force flyover (like they do sometimes for the 4th of July)- but there was no mention of anything anywhere she looked. Everything settled down after that, but everyone was wondering what was going on- especially considering the problems in our country right now.
Things soon calmed down after a while, and all the neighbors went back inside, but the Can Opener thought about the Critters and their parents- who had only been about 10 minutes away from our house when it happened. She called to find out if they had seen and heard anything, and they had. The jet had flown over them as they were going over a bridge- and the first thought was that there was some attack happening- but it wasn’t. Still it unnerved everyone- especially because of the suddenness of it- and Jazlyn (the Big Critter) was afraid the bridge they were on might collapse and they would go into the water.
They made it back home, and things returned to normal, but we were all struck by how sudden and how loud and scary it was. (Except for Sushi- who somehow managed to sleep through the whole thing).
Speaking of empty tummies, I’m going to go talk my human into opening a can of tuna to calm my nerves…..
I needed the Can Opener to go to sleep so I could track down the new bag of treats she’s been hiding from Twilight and me. So I decided to snuggle up with her when the Tiny One took her nap, and conveniently “nap” on her lap until she fell asleep.
But the problem is, the Can Opener never takes a nap. She reads, or plays games or just talks with someone while the Tiny One sleeps- only this time, luckily, she did fall asleep because the night before she had tossed and turned all night.
I thought it would be a breeze to just sneak off while they slept and find my delicious bag of treats. Unfortunately, I fell asleep for real. By the time I woke up to begin my treat hunt, the Can Opener was already trying to wake up the little One.
So, I didn’t have the chance I thought I would to track down the treat bag. I guess next time I’ll have to try harder to just look asleep. But I did get a lot of love and snuggles and my belly rubbed a lot.
Twilight says she is going to teach me her tricks- I don’t know what she does differently, but she sure knows how to get what she wants every time. So, I guess after she teaches me her tricks I’ll try again. Meanwhile, I’ll settle for the best tummy rubs I’ve ever had in all my 9 lives!
Well, if I were human, I would apologize for my late post today. Good thing I’m not human, right? So I won’t apologize because, well, I’m a cat. Cats don’t apologize, because we don’t care. Also, we’re so cute, we usually get by with anything. Good thing, too. Because I like my nice long naps- even though…. SUSHI SNORES!!!!!
Fine. You sleep, I’ll go play!
Oh my! I’m so happy I could leave my human a nice fresh present (hairball) just for practice!! All morning while the Can Opener was trying to wake up with her coffee and have her purrayer time, Twilight- that little annoying Albino Flea- kept swatting and nipping at me trying to make me play and she was irritating the holy fleas right off me! I was about to go for it and just knock her from here to Texas.
Purrfect. Now I can FINALLY sleep! Happy Caturday!
Start the popcorn and bring the treats, human! I’m going to sharpen my techniques in this educational mouse hunting video and then go outside and catch you a couple of big, juicy ones for dinner!
Don’t forget to set the table!
Okay, So there wasn’t a “Day One,” or a “Day Two.” That’s because today is the third straight day of icy cold rain and wind, and frankly, I didn’t think about plotting against the weatherman until today. My bad.
The Can Opener says, “Twilight, you’re a little grumpy today- feeling a little cattitude?” I asked her how she’d like her clothes shredded. (Never got an answer- she just sort of suddenly decided to get a cup of coffee and go clean something). I am so tired of rain. The entire backyard (which is my purrsonal playground), looks like a lake (except for all the mud)…. and I can’t go out and play and come in and leave nice, muddy pawprints on things like I normally would. There goes the highlight of my day.
To make matters worse, there’s a flock of at least 20 big fat ducks (and a pair of geese), who constantly hang out on the bike path behind our house at stare at me through the window while the rain is pouring down on them and I swear they’re daring me to come get them. Hope mom doesn’t mind the big puddle of drool in the windowsill.
Now those aren’t the same ducks that have been inviting me to dinner since this flooding started- the human actually made me have to find a picture that looked like them (“since you can’t go out and play anyway”)- It’s not my fault she’s too lazy to put a tarp on and stand out in the pouring rain and get me a picture.
And Sushi is no help at all. She’s perfectly content to stay inside and keep the couch from getting up and walking away.
So since Sushi is too lazy to play with me and the Can Opener says she can’t control the weather, my only choice is to go after the weatherman. But How?
I told the Can Opener that now that she’s all better, it’s time to pay up- she owes me some SERIOUS playtime- (with interest). When I saw her have her coffee and prayer time this morning and then start baking cookies for the Critters and their parents, I knew she was feeling better, so I made it clear (by hijacking her desk chair), that I wanted to play.
So we played for a few minutes until I had to scratch… and then I had to bathe because she kept messing up my fur- and then I had to lick between my toes, because, well, I’m a cat, and I’d only done that 4 times today.
Well there’s something about me stopping a play session to fix my fur, scratch, lick between my toes, (and scratch my ears) that seems to tell the Can Opener, “I’m done playing.” Then she goes and gets busy with something else.
I don’t get what it is with her. My bathing and scratching session only lasts 20 minutes- I see absolutely no reason whatsoever why she can’t just sit there in front of me with the pink thingie, my mice, my golfballs, and pingpong balls, and a ribbon assortment and just wait until I’m done…with a big bucket of treats.
I guess I need to start training her all over again. Or maybe I’ll trade her in for a newer model.
See? He probably left a play session to groom too-
I love Caturdays! The house is quiet, the Can Openers aren’t as busy, and snuggle sessions are longer and sweeter.
I sneak a lap or two of coffee when the human walks away from her cup for a minute, and snuggle up in her lap when she sits down to enjoy it. The next thing I know, I’m groomed, and freshened and fall asleep feeling unbelievably content and loved.
But Caturdays are the very best.
Twilight gets her snuggles and eats then runs outside to find her Mama and they play and hunt together- while I keep the human company and get snuggles as she has her morning coffee and devotion. And throughout the day she plays with me and spoils me.
When I remember how lonely and unwanted I was before I came here, I can’t believe that life is finally over for me. It’s like I died and went to kitty heaven! Before I wasn’t talked to or handled (unless I was being left someplace)- and when I was left with others they didn’t interact with me because I wasn’t wanted. Sometimes I knew I was downright unwelcome. It was no fun being left in temporary places while my previous human discarded me for long trips. And it always hurt my feelings that after being gone for a long time, she was never happy to see me.
But I’m so happy now. No more long, lonely days wondering if or when I’ll see my “owner” again- and being hurt when she returned because she didn’t want to take me home. Even though I fight with Twilight sometimes (because I don’t always want to play)- I’m still so happy, because I have a family now. And they WANT ME.
I wonder how many other cats there are out there who aren’t loved and wanted? I know there have to be more – and I just wish I could give them hope that someday, somehow- they’ll have a happy family too.
Maybe someday I can find a way…
