How to Train Your Humans

Later, Sushi- I have a lesson to do.

Help them Catify!

I haven’t posted a lesson for you would-be respectable cats for a while, because I’ve had my paws full around here with the critters, Sushi, and the would-be feline home invader, Smokey.

But he got me thinking… of course, if he is lost, or was left behind by a family who moved out, he needs a home, and cuddles, and food- and of course, flea treatment (for the love of Ceiling Cat, PLEASE)!

But whether a cat moves in to a home by manipulation (Smokey is good at that)- or by invitation, a respectable cat still needs to know how to train his “owners.”

Now, Smokey hasn’t been adopted (but he sure is trying)- because the Can Opener has her paws full already -(and the whole neighborhood loves him and wants him).

But for you cats who are adopted, here are a few pointers you help you train your “owners” to your specifications.

For one, help them “Catify” the house to your liking….

Claim the computer- so you can sell the other pets on ebay and make sure they’re not looking at videos of other cats.
Once you snuggle up on a lap, don’t let them get up.
Make sure they take you surfing on demand. Cats need entertainment too.
Don’t let them back-talk you.

And make sure you tell them how to fix your castle to your liking…

Make your design choices clear to the Resident in charge. Otherwise, catification won’t happen.

Twilight’s Tips for Humans

You make me feel safe, Mom. You were always my favorite!

The Can Opener is my favorite human.

I love our human. At first I was upset and didn’t want to share her with Sushi. But Sushi was so relieved and happy when she joined our family, that I started to warm up to her a little. She wasn’t trying to steal my Can Opener’s affection, she just needed to feel secure and loved. She had been ignored and neglected for a long time by her previous “owner” and her feelings were hurt. But soon after coming here, she started to feel calmer and she loves our human. So do I.

When the Backup Can Opener was still here, he used to complain because both Sushi and I followed Mom everywhere, and we love to play with her and settle in on her lap every chance we get – and he could never understand why we didn’t treat him the same way – (even though we loved him too).

Let’s play a little longer, Mom- Sushi won’t mind!

There were some basic differences, though. While we loved him too, we just felt more special with the Can Opener. After all, she always talks softly to us, and she grooms us, and gives us back scratches, and treats – and plays with us- and she was always the one who fed us and took us to the vet. He would pet us sometimes, but not really interact with us. So, of course, we bonded more with our Can Opener.

Mom says this is something that a lot of cat “parents” experience. She understands us kitties a lot more than he did- because he didn’t have kitties growing up, so he didn’t really understand us. And he tried to relate to us the same way he used to relate to his dogs.

That doesn’t work for cats. So, we looked up this video to help humans understand that we cats – well, we’re not dogs. So in case some of you humans wonder why your cats seem to have a favorite person (and it’s not you)- this may help you understand us felines a little better. We always love all the humans in our house- but some humans are a little irritating (noisy)- or, they don’t respect our need for peace when we want to be left alone…

Or some may even remind us of someone who hurt us or was mean to us before. Nothing personal, but memories are memories, after all. And even humans have automatic responses to unpleasant memories.

So grab some popcorn and watch and learn why some kitties respond the way they do.

Now be a good little human and watch the video!

Caturday Craftiness

Does something look “off” in this picture? There’s a reason for that!!! 😹

I got even with SHEBA!! MWAHAHA!😹

She had it coming! That crazy psycho cat that belongs to the Can Opener’s sister has been asking for trouble for a year now. She slithers into my house anytime she feels like it, and hops up on my cat tree- and sits in MY bedroom window, and snoops around looking for MY treats and demands food from MY human- she does this because her Mom and our Can Opener are sisters-

She has always been free to come in my house, and I was always free to go into her house before- but that was before she saw me let her Mom pet me. Ever since then, if the Can Opener goes to her sisters house, and I follow her, slithering Sheba, sneaks up to me and growls and chases me off! Sometimes, even when she comes into my house she tries to chase me out- that’s when I see a side of the Can Opener that I never knew existed….Nothing gets her dander up like messing with me or Sushi! Or her two-legged Critters.

She puts little Miss Slither-Butt in her place right away, and lets her know she can’t come in our house if she’s going to growl at me or Sushi- (oddly enough, Sushi just looks at her, and Sheba runs out)- I can’t figure out why she never bothers Sushi- unless maybe because She doesn’t know how to chase a mountain.

But I got enough of Miss Slither-Butt today- and when the Can Opener went to see her sister I followed her, prepared for a battle. Lucky for me, Slither-Butt was out someplace- (I don’t like a fight)- so I took adavantage of the opportunity to “repay” her Royal Hiney.

I let her Mom pet me all she wanted (to make sure when she pet Sheba again, MY scent will be all over her Mom)!!!!! 😹 And then, I played with all her toys (she has some fun toys- hint, hint, Mom)!

And then,….My favorite part of all….

Take that, Ms. Slither-Butt!

I’m giving the Can Opener a break- for tonight!

Not that she deserves it, mind you- but I want treats!

That Dang Vet told her to cut back my treats!

This is because at my last visit, I had gained weight- (because of that steroid shot they gave me last summer)- so the Can Opener doesn’t let me “free feed” anymore- now I get fed at specific times of day (on the Can Opener’s open schedule)- I’ll starve!!!!

I think I’ve already lost a few precious ounces… my paws feel smaller- I think that’s enough- besides, when she brushes me, she brushes off at least 3 pounds of my fur- and I’m sure some of that has to be Twilight’s fur that just kind of landed on me when she walked by.

So if part of my “weight” is just fur- and if most of that is Twilight’s fur that just settles on me when I’m minding my own business, sleeping in the carpet… then WHY am I on a diet?

I think she should just suck Twilight up in the vacuum and I’ll immediately lose weight. Think she’ll believe me?

Me either- But tomorrow I’m going to try to convince her. Meanwhile, I’m going to cuddle her tonight and be really, really sweet- maybe she’ll cut me some slack in the morning and load me up on treats!

After all, it’s not my fault that I’m 17 pounds of pure love!
There’s always option two….

Caturday Cats

Thanks for the coffee, human- but you forgot the whipped cream. Can we go back to playing now?

Here’s why you need a cat- or 2, or, 4 ….

Everyone knows we cats are great companions, but we’re a lot more than that. We watch over our Can Openers in a ton of different ways- (after all, we can’t operate a can opener)-

But did you know we also help our humans around the house (besides chasing those mice and eating flies and spiders)? For example, we prevent you from slipping on your floor and getting hurt, by making sure we throw up on the carpet or your bed instead. You’re welcome.

We also help you learn how to properly care for us- like when you serve us something unacceptable and we just walk away, or bury it-(hint, hint)!

And when you try to bathe us and we claw you and run dripping through the house. Get a clue!

We’re also very concerned about the welfare of our human Can Openers (and the little Can Openers in training)… For example, we’re always happy to help you avoid those annoying trips to the vet…saving you money!

You’re welcome.

And we’re always willing to help entertain the little Can Openers or other pets in the house-

And we never mind helping keep the dog from chasing the postman or the neighbors (or us)-

Disclaimer: While we cats can help eliminate a lot of problems with dogs, unfortunately we cannot stop them from chasing parked cars.

Caturday Coolness!

It’s going to be hot today, Twilight but the Can Opener has us covered- Let’s help other kitties stay safe and cool today!

Keeping your kitties cool in the heat!

We’re back! Our Can Opener has had the Critters a lot more this last week than usual because their Mom and Dad both had jury duty. We thought our human would NEVER have time to just snuggle and play with us again!

She is also taking care of her sister now and is taking (new) classes in addition to still doing grief counseling. She’s busier than a fly around an ice cream cone!

But it’s going to be really hot today, so when she started preparing ways for my (still feral) Mama to stay cool through the extreme heat, she started thinking about everyone else’s kitties, and we thought she could help us write about it so everyone can know things they can do to keep their kitties safe from heat exhaustion and heat stroke in this weather- (inside and outside)! So Sushi and I are going to have some whipped cream and let the Can Opener take over from here. Enjoy! 😻

Heat Exhaustion / Heat stroke in cats

Healthy cats and kittens are normally well adapted to heat, since they were desert animals orginially. But few people realize that older or sick animals are just as miserable in the heat as we are. And feral cats, older or obese cats, and cats with asthma, heart conditions or kidney conditions are especaially vulnerable to the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

First, here are the warning signs leading to heat exhaustion in cats (which can lead to heat stroke, coma and death).

If you see these signs, your pet is approaching hyperthermia (heat exhaustion)- take steps quickly to cool him down to prevent exhaustion!

  1. panting, drooling
  2. excessive grooming in an effort to cool off
  3. restless behavior (looking for a cool place)

If your cat’s body temperature keeps rising, heat exhaustion can occur quickly-

Watch for:

  • rapid breathing
  • redness of the mouth and tongue
  • vomiting
  • lethargy
  • stumbling gait
  • and a (rectal) temp. over 105 F

According to WebMD pets, if there is no intervention at this point, the cat’s body heat will continue to rise enough to cause the cat to collapse into seizures, coma, and death.

So how do you keep your cat safe in excessive heat?

  1. Make sure your cat can always easily access fresh, cool water. And if it’s extremely hot, or if you have no air conditioning, change the water a couple of times a day and consider placing a few extra bowls around the house. Also, consider placing a fan where it will blow in the general area of your cat, (but not directly on him)
  2. If your cat goes out, or if you have visiting ferals, provide clean water for them outside in a shady area, and add some ice (or freeze a bowl of water and in the morning, dump out the chunk of ice and provide it in a bowl or on a plate in a shaded area for strays to stay cool. As the ice melts throughout the day, it will keep water available for them.
  3. Consider leaving a sprinkler on (just barely) in the yard to provide a constant “fountain” of water.
  4. If your cat goes outside and has a favorite spot, freeze a bottle of water and wrap a towel around it and place it where he likes to hang out (preferably in a shady spot).
  5. If you have cats that go outside also, try to keep them inside between 10 am-3 pm which is usually the hottest part of the day. Particularly if your cat is white! (more on that later)…
  6. Help your indoor cat stay hydrated by also giving them wet food which contains more water and is helpful for older or sick cats (or cats with kidney problems) who may not drink a lot of water. You can also offer them cat broths poured over their dry food for extra hydration
  7. Cooling mats are also an excellent and easy way to provide relief both indoors and outdoors (in a shady spot) for your cats (and dogs)- such as these I found on Amazon (I do not earn any money from these links)- non toxic, pressure activated, self charging!

Please remember your cats (and doggies) can’t tell you when they are suffering from the heat! They depend on you to keep them safe! Please be alert on super hot days, and NEVER leave your cat or doggie in a hot car!

My turn at the vet- TODAY!

They assembled me all wrong!

I hope the Vet can fix me!

I guess this is why I have to go to the vet today- I feel fine- and I told Mom so- but for some reason she is insisting I have to go. I’m eating as usual, I’m playing as usual, picking on Sushi (as usual)- and chasing away all the would – be Can Opener stealers that keep showing up around here.

I’ve protested – but she’s not having it. And Sushi seems to be gloating that I’m going now. I’ll deal with her later!

NOOOOOOOOOOO! I’M NOT LEAVING!

I don’t wanna come out!
Well,… I like the tech and the vet- so MAYBE…

Well I’m glad I went now- (but I’m not letting Mom know)- the tech and the vet were so sweet to me and they didn’t poke me with any needles- and even offered me treats!

Best part is they told Mom I’m a very fit, healthy (and beautiful) little girl- and that my teeth look great! So, aside from them clipping my claws and recommending the Can Opener get me microchipped -(since I love to go out)- it wasn’t so bad. And (unlike Sushi)- I still weigh the same I did last year- 9.7 lbs of cuteness!

I just may forgive Mom- especially since she surprised me with a new dangly toy! 😹💚

What did the vet DO!?

The Can Opener took Sushi to the vet today in my place…
MOM! I’m okay, really! Take Twilight- she has a headache- I’m sure she does!

Flourescent tears?? HOW!?

The Can Opener took Sushi in to see the vet today, and I’m going on Monday- she did it because Sushi’s eyes were super runny- every time Mom looked at her it looked like she had tears streaming down her face, and even though her eyes looked normal, Sushi kept pawing at them so Mom decided to take her to the vet and let me go in Sushi’s spot on Monday. (Gee, thanks, Mom- but I’ll pass).

I’d better get a ton of treats and some tuna for this, Mom. I know where you sleep!
Something doesn’t look right, Mom. What did they DO!?

The Can Opener had been noticing for the last week that Sushi’s eyes were draining- but she already had an appointment to take her to the vet on Monday. But when she saw that the other eye also had started draining a lot, she decided it probably shouldn’t wait til after the weekend and took her in to get checked out.

They did a special kind of eye exam they’d never done on Sushi before to make sure she didn’t have a scratched cornea or something stuck in her eye.

That meant the vet put some kind of drops in her eyes to numb them, and some kind of dye to make any injuries to the eye flourescent green! (Mom should’ve waited til Halloween)!

Poor Sushi was not happy- for the rest of the evening last night, Sushi’s watery eye was raining flourescent green tears!

Okay Mom, I’m glad that’s over and my eyes are okay- that’ll cost you two mackerel, two tunas, and a boatload of treats, please. You may pay up any time now.

We’re all happy to know that she doesn’t seem to have an injury to the eyes or anything in them, so she got to go home with a new and powerful antibiotic eye ointment the human has to hire the National Guard to put in her eyes three times a day now for the next two weeks. It took the vet, the assistant, and Mom to get the first ones in. I sure hope all those workouts the Can Opener did will pay off now- as for me, I’m going to get some popcorn and watch the fight!

This is going to be a great show!

Morning Coffee with Twilight

Good job, Mom! You finished your classes! NOW LET’S PLAY!

Finally! Now, take a break and play with me!

After weeks of studying and testing and helping your sister, you finally finished your courses and can be human again! Maybe now you can type for Sushi and I and get back to spoiling us like you did before all this stuff started. It’s no wonder you haven’t had much free time- with the classes, counseling, physical therapy, and the Critters- and making time for a grief journal too-

But seriously, Sushi and I are about to take matters into our own paws if you don’t back off from some things and get back to spoiling us! And get us some new toys, too!

Wait- WHAT? WHAT VET?
Wait- Who said anything about the VET? We’re not sick!

TWO APPOINTMENTS? THEY’RE BOTH FOR HER, RIGHT?

That’s it- I’m outta here!
That’s it. I’m taking my toy and hiding!

Oh, no you don’t! If you leave, she’ll take ME!
Whatever- I already saw the vet- wake me up after your appointments.

“Twilight- Is there a Twilight here?”
